Summer has hit the UK and I am absolutely loving the weather! However, I highly, highly recommend that you save all your pennies and invest in a holiday. This could be anything from camping in the remote villages of Cornwall, to flying to Greece to eat some delicious souvlaki, here’s why…
It’s really easy to get into a boring routine. We get up, we go to work, we come home, we cook, we get ready for bed. Maybe (if you’re that exciting) you manage to squeeze in a gym trip or a social event. The point is, we get sucked into the horrid rat race that is work. It consumes us and we forget that there’s actually a little, if not a lot more to life than just going to work. Going away on holiday is an opportunity to escape the mundane lifestyle and it’s a chance to be surrounded by completely new surroundings, with no routine. After all, what do we work for?
There’s truly no greater feeling than arriving to your new destination. You breathe an intense sigh of relief; this trip that you have been planning for weeks, if not months has finally arrived. It’s time to unpack your favourite clothes, check out your new home for the next few days and remind yourself what this place has to offer. Not to mention, you completely forget about work. Doesn’t that just show how intense it can be?
Placing yourself in new surroundings is an opportunity for your brain to wake up, to take in the new environment, to take in the new culture, the smells, the sights, the sounds. I don’t know about you, but I find it SO interesting to see how othe people live and it’s crazy to think that when you leave, life there will carry on. I also find it even more interesting to see how I adapt to my new short-term lifestyle. How I think, how I speak, the things I want to do, the people I meet and the food I choose to eat. It really is fascinating how we can turn into a different person, simply by being present in a new location. What can we learn during our vacation?
Never underestimate the importance of culture. You probably don’t even realise, but by immersing yourself in a new culture, you are learning so much, you are becoming creative, you are becoming less judgemental, you are living! Life isn’t just about what you know at home. It’s not about the commute that you take every day, it’s not about the job that you do everyday and it really isn’t about the same old people you see every, single, day. The next time you go away, really take the time to look around. Find out the local history, speak to a complete stranger, look at the old buildings, who designed them? What’s the local cuisine? Is that Paella? Where’s the best place to see the sun rise? Wander without purpose.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting for one minute that you book a flight to Mexico at the drop of a hat and give your bank account a heart attack. Of course it takes time to save up for a holiday. But, why don’t you? Write down or research a destination that you want to go to, work out how much it costs and save. Print a photo off and post it on your mood board. Imagine yourself at your desired location, sipping a cocktail or two, or three! This will ensure that you stay motivated to save. This will provide a great reason to jump out of bed like a ray of sunshine and go to work. Without work, there’s no money. Without money, there’s no holiday!
Mental health and well-being is more important than ever before. I believe that a holiday should not be seen as a luxury and should instead been seen as opportunities to re-charge, re-fuel and re-start. So take the time to invest in your mental health, after all, who else is going to? Even if it’s a local camping trip until you can afford something further. Invest your money into you! Invest in your education, learn something interesting and wonderful about another country. Treat yourself. Explore somewhere new. But, most importantly, take the time away from work and your day to day life and swap for some fun, culture, great food, history, peace , relaxation and you time.
If you’re going on holiday this year, I am so excited for you! If you don’t have anything booked, I truly believe that you should consider saving up and investing into a holiday in order to contribute to a more positive, healthy and happier lifestyle.
Where will you be this time next year?
